A scissor lift is an aerial lift platform used to elevate workers and equipment at manufacturing and industrial job sites. Scissor lifts feature a lifting mechanism consisting of linked, folding supports arranged in a crisscross “X” pattern that raises the platform vertically.

A brand-new scissor lift is significantly less expensive than a boom lift. The price depends on factors such as work height, platform height, weight capacity and power/fuel source. As an example, an electric scissor lift with a work height of up to 38 feet, a platform height of up to 32 feet and a weight capacity of 900 pounds can carry a cost of $7,000 to $22,000.

The weight of a scissor lift varies based on the type of machine. A 19-foot scissor lift with a maximum working height of 25 feet and a lift capacity of 500 pounds will weigh approximately one ton. A 26-foot lift with a maximum platform weight capacity of 800 pounds and a maximum platform height of 25.5 feet can weigh as much as 4,700 pounds.

You can rent scissor lifts by the day, week or month. A larger scissor lift will typically have a higher rental rate than a smaller unit. For example, a 19-foot narrow scissor lift may rent for around $130 per day, $400 per week and $1,000 per month. The approximate rates for a 32-foot indoor/outdoor lift are $250 per day, $600 per week and $1,200 per month.

The approximate lifting height range is 20 to 50 feet, although 32 to 40 feet is typical. In contrast, boom lifts are now available that can reach heights of up to 185 feet. Since scissor lifts are designed for lifting a higher volume of workers and materials than scissor lifts and other aerial platforms, they tend to offer a lower lift capacity to ensure safety.

According to OSHA regulations, all individuals who work with or around scissor lifts must meet certain training and certification requirements before operating a scissor lift. In addition to ensuring that their scissor lift users attain certification, employers are responsible for providing formal and informal instruction on how to operate the lifts safely based on the type of machine and work environment. OSHA indicates that training is essential for avoiding workplace accidents.
